Haematology Research Fellow
Haematology Research Unit | North Shore Hospital | Health New Zealand

Build your expertise in haematology clinical trials in a dedicated research environment

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Haematology Research Fellow to join the Haematology Research Unit at North Shore Hospital.

This is an exciting opportunity for a doctor with an interest in haematology and clinical research to gain substantial experience in the conduct of Phase I, II and III clinical trials, working alongside experienced haematologists and a dedicated multidisciplinary research team.

The role is predominantly focused on clinical research and the care of patients participating in clinical trials. There is no general or non-trial outpatient clinic commitment.

This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with no routine shift work or weekend roster.

About our Research Unit

The Haematology Research Unit at North Shore Hospital is a well-established and growing clinical research unit, currently managing more than 30 active clinical research studies across a broad range of haematological malignancies.

Our portfolio includes Phase I, II and III clinical trials, providing patients with access to innovative and emerging therapies across areas including acute myeloid leukaemia, multiple myeloma, lymphoma and myeloproliferative neoplasms. The unit has particular experience in the delivery of complex studies and novel therapies, including bispecific antibodies.

You will join an experienced multidisciplinary research team comprising haematologists, research nurses, study coordinators and research support staff, working closely with international pharmaceutical companies, contract research organisations and collaborative research groups.

The unit has a strong reputation for high-quality clinical trial delivery, patient-centred research and successful recruitment to international studies, providing an excellent environment in which to develop expertise in clinical research and trial medicine.

About the role

As Haematology Research Fellow, you will have an active clinical role in the delivery of our haematology clinical trial portfolio and will work as a sub-Investigator on our clinical studies.

You will work closely with Principal Investigators, haematologists, research nurses and study coordinators, as well as pharmaceutical sponsors, collaborative trial groups, contract research organisations and other clinical services.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing medical care and clinical oversight for patients participating in haematology clinical trials.
  • Attending dedicated research clinics and undertaking screening and follow-up assessments.
  • Assessing patient eligibility and obtaining informed consent for clinical trials.
  • Performing clinical assessments and reviewing laboratory, imaging and other diagnostic results in accordance with study protocols.
  • Assessing treatment suitability and managing protocol-directed treatment in collaboration with the Principal Investigator.
  • Managing clinical issues, adverse events and other trial-related medical matters.
  • Responding to clinical queries from research nurses, study coordinators, patients, clinical research associates and medical monitors.
  • Acting as a Sub-Investigator for clinical trials.
  • Ensuring studies are conducted in accordance with the approved protocol, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), applicable regulatory requirements and local policies.
  • Working collaboratively with the wider research team to support safe, high-quality and timely delivery of clinical trials.
  • Contributing to education and professional development within the research team.
  • Undertaking a research project during the Fellowship, with the aim of presenting preliminary or final results at a scientific meeting.

These duties reflect the research and clinical responsibilities described in the position description, including dedicated research clinics, consent and management of trial participants, clinical queries and an individual research project.

What we are looking for

We are looking for a doctor who is enthusiastic about clinical research, enjoys working as part of a multidisciplinary team and is committed to providing excellent care to patients participating in clinical trials.

You will bring strong clinical judgement, excellent communication skills and a high level of attention to detail. You will be comfortable working in a highly regulated environment where patient safety, protocol compliance, accurate documentation and effective teamwork are essential.

Previous clinical trial experience and knowledge of Good Clinical Practice would be advantageous, although this position also provides an excellent opportunity to further develop these skills. The position requires the ability to work effectively with patients, clinical colleagues, research staff, sponsors and contract research organisations.

You will generally be:

  • undertaking the later stages of advanced training in Haematology; or
  • recently qualified in Haematology; or
  • undertaking physician training with relevant haematology experience and a strong interest in clinical research.

Applicants must be registered, or eligible for registration, as a medical practitioner with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

Why join Haematology Research?

This Fellowship provides the opportunity to develop significant experience in clinical trial medicine within a dedicated research environment, while continuing to develop your clinical expertise in haematology.

You will gain hands-on experience across the clinical trial lifecycle, including patient selection and consent, protocol-directed treatment, safety assessment, investigator responsibilities, interaction with sponsors and CROs, and the management of patients receiving novel therapies.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • develop experience across Phase I–III haematology clinical trials;
  • work with novel and emerging therapies;
  • develop your knowledge of GCP, regulatory requirements and investigator responsibilities;
  • undertake and contribute to clinical research;
  • present research findings at scientific meetings;
  • participate in multidisciplinary research and haematology education; and
  • work within an experienced, supportive and collaborative research team.

Most importantly, you will work directly with patients participating in clinical trials and contribute to providing access to new and emerging treatments.
