Fellow in Haematology - Royal Perth Hospital

A position is available at Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) for a Fellow/ Senior Registrar in clinical and laboratory haematology available from 24 April 2023 until February 2024 or depending on applicants availability.

The position is suitable for trainees who have completed, or are completing, RACP and RCPA joint training in 2023 or 2024 and wish to develop further expertise in clinical research. Applicants must have completed part 1 FRACP.

The department is involved with clinical trials across the spectrum of haematology malignancies with a focus on acute myeloid leukaemia, myeloma and lymphoma.

Cell and Tissue Therapies of Western Australia (CTTWA) is a facility on site at RPH responsible for stem cell processing for autologous stem cell transplants and the development of cellular therapies. The haematology department works closely with CTTWA which is currently running trials assessing the immunomodulatory effects of mesenchymal stem cells in myelodysplasia, inflammatory bowel disease and organ transplant rejection.

CTTWA is also actively involved with a CAR-T cell therapy developmental program using autologous and “off the shelf” allogeneic CAR-T cells.

RPH Haematology Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in research projects in collaboration with Professor Wendy Erber and her team at the University of Western Australia. Fellows have recently been successful applicants for research grants looking at:

  • The role of plasma DNA (liquid biopsies) in the diagnosis and management of acute myeloid leukaemia and myelodysplastic syndromes.

  • Improving the detection of 17p deletion in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and multiple myeloma using novel immunoflow-FISH.

  • Genomic instability in myeloproliferative neoplasms.

    Responsibilities include a shared service commitment with other fellows and advanced trainees in performing and reporting bone marrow biopsies, reporting laboratory results including peripheral bloods and flow cytometry. Clinical responsibilities include inpatient care, outpatients and a consultative service and an on call commitment.
