Haematologist Position: Hawkes Bay / Palmerston North, New Zealand

 As a result of a retirement, Te Pae Hauora o Ruahine o Tararua | MidCentral are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Clinical Haematologist to join our team as a permanent member of regional haematology service, to be based at either Hastings or Palmerston North Hospital.

 The position is for 40 hours per week with participation in a 1 in 8 on-call, after-hours roster.  The position has the flexibility to be based at either Hastings or Palmerston North Hospital, with clinical responsibilities in one or more of the regions covered by the Regional Cancer Treatment Service.

Applicants should be trained in both clinical and laboratory Haematology and hold the appropriate vocational registrations with the Medical Council of New Zealand or be eligible to obtain these.

MidCentral provides clinical haematology, radiation oncology and medical oncology services to the regions that cover the communities of Manawatu, northern Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay, Whanganui and Taranaki.  This is a combined population of 500,000.

The position is to join an established haematology team of seven SMOs and four RMOs.

 The service provides inpatient and outpatient haematology care and manages a wide range of both malignant and non-malignant haematological disorders, including acute leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma, bleeding and thrombotic disorders.  We perform autologous stem cell transplants at Palmerston North Hospital.  Inpatient care is delivered at Palmerston North Hospital while outpatient clinics are run at Palmerston North, Whanganui, Hawera, New Plymouth and Hawkes Bay Hospitals, with outpatient chemotherapy delivered in the regional sites. The department maintains an active clinical research portfolio including clinical trials. The service is an approved FRACP and FRCPA training centre and undertakes active post graduate teaching at House Officer, Senior House Officer and Registrar level.  Multi-disciplinary case meetings (Tumour Boards) are held locally and regionally.

 There is also an opportunity to undertake pathology work with MedLab Central, based at Palmerston North Hospital, for an applicant based in Palmerston North.
