NHMRC Centre for Blood Transplant and Cell Therapies Webinar 30 May 2022

The Centre for Blood Transplant and Cell Therapies (CBTCT) brings together the largest allogeneic stem cell transplant units in Australia with a focus on identifying transplant and cell therapy strategies to reduce graft versus host disease and improve patient and disease outcomes after transplant. In this webinar series, speakers will review major topics in stem cell transplantation and cell therapy, highlighting how key advances are addressing the current challenges in stem cell transplantation. This webinar features Professor Nicolaus Kroger, who is the Medical Director of the Department of Stem Cell Transplantation and Professor of Medicine at the University Medical Center in Hamburg-Eppendorf, Germany. Since 2018, he has served as the President of the European Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT), and the a co-editor of the EBMT Handbook and the EBMT/EHA CAR-T cell Handbook. From 2014 – 2020 he was the chairman of the German Stem Cell Working Group, and is an active member of several Scientific Committees such as ASH, EHA and ESH. Professor Kroger has published extensively in his area of expertise and contributed to more than 750 publications. In this webinar, Professor Kroger will be comparing the roles of haploidentical and matched unrelated donor stem cell transplantation in acute myeloid leukaemia.

HSANZ  - RCPAQAP  2022 Case studies for CPD

HSANZ has partnered with RCPAQAP again and invite you to participate in the second two Haematology Case Studies for CPD. Thank you to our Members who have kindly created these cases.

The case studies are open to Haematologists and registrars in Australia and New Zealand. Scientists with relevant experience may also submit responses. Your answers will not be graded, and a discussion report will be emailed after your submission.

Each case study has three sections, completion of all three sections will award you 30 minutes towards RCPA CPD.  You can access the first section of each case below, you can navigate to the subsequent sections using the links at the end of sections 1 and 2.

Closing date: 5pm AEST, April 29, 2022

Case Study 1 involves the investigation and laboratory features of B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders.

The TGA has recently approved EVUSHELD, a novel combination of two antibodies that target the SARS-CoV-2 virus, to be used to prevent the development of COVID in patients with moderate to severe immune deficiency. We understand that stocks will be limited and that EVUSHELD will be distributed through statewide cancer networks in the first instance. This represents a major breakthrough for patients who are unable to mount adequate vaccine responses including patients post-stem cell transplantation, or who have had b-cell depleting therapies. A joint HSANZ position statement is under development.

In this webinar series, speakers will review major topics in stem cell transplantation and cell therapy, highlighting how key advances are addressing the current challenges in stem cell transplantation. This webinar features Prof Stefan Ciurea, who is the Director of the UCI Health Haematopoetic Stem Cell Transplantation and Cell Therapies Program and a Professor of Clinical Medicine at the UCI School of Medicine. Prof Ciurea is the author of more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and more than 10 book chapters. He has made important research contributions in the biology of myelofibrosis and haploidentical haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, including the first documentation of the association between anti-HLA antibodies and graft rejection as well as in the development of natural killer cell based therapeutics. In this webinar, Prof Ciurea will be speaking on the utility of NK cell based therapies in improving outcomes of patients with malignancy.
